Smoking a Boston Butt
Smoking a Boston butt is one of the most rewarding experiences a pit master can have. If you’re a fan of juicy and flavorful pork, you’re in for a treat! A well-smoked Boston butt is a surefire way to impress your family and friends at your next barbecue.
To make your life easier, we’re going to use T-13 as the rub for our Boston butt. T-13 is a classic blend of seasonings that’s perfect for pork. The beauty of this rub is that it’s simple to obtain and will complement the natural flavor of the meat.
Smoked Boston Butt
Here’s what you’ll need:
A 8-10lb Boston butt
T-13 rub
Wood chips (hickory, apple, or cherry work well)
Meat thermometer
Step 1: Prepare the Boston butt Trim any excess fat from the pork and make a few shallow cuts on the top of the meat. This will allow the rub to penetrate the meat more deeply.
Step 2: Apply the T-13. Rub the mixture all over the Boston butt, making sure to get it into all the nooks and crannies.
Step 3: Smoke the pork Set up your smoker to maintain a temperature of 225-250°F. If you’re using wood chips, soak them in water for 30 minutes and then add them to the smoker. Place the Boston butt in the smoker, fat-side up, and let it cook for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours per pound.
Step 4: Check the temperature Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the pork. When the temperature reaches around 175°F wrap the shoulder and continue to cook until it reaches 205°F. Once the pork reaches this temperature, remove it from the smoker and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.
Step 5: Serve the pork Once the pork has rested, it’s ready to be pulled or shredded and served. The meat should be juicy, tender, and flavorful. Serve it with your favorite sides, such as baked beans or coleslaw, and enjoy!
In conclusion, smoking a Boston butt is a delicious and rewarding experience. By using T-13 as the rub and following these simple steps, you’ll be able to achieve mouth-watering results every time. So, fire up your smoker, grab a cold drink, and get ready to enjoy the best smoked pork you’ve ever had!
